The workshop concept
was “How to develop the collaboration between the GIS Center and the inspectorates”.
The program consisted of two sessions of speakers followed by three round
tables. The 1st session started with the achievements of the GIS
Center and was followed by a description of the workflow of the GIS Center
units. The application of GIS in archaeology was demonstrated by a presentation
with a documentary film about the site visits in the Red Sea Governorate.
The 2nd session demonstrated how cooperation between the GIS
Center and the inspectorates works, including how data is collected in
cooperation with the inspectors. In addition, some photos of archaeological sites
that have historical importance were shown.
Then the role of the
GIS Center in registering Alexandria’s Old City through the use of GPS was
introduced by the director of the Underwater and Maritime Archaeology Department
of the SCA in Alexandria.
The wrap-up round
tables were the core of this workshop and the aim to set up a technical and administrative
methodology to provide the inspectorates and the SCA sectors with the GIS
Center data.
